The IDDRI Oceans and Coastal Zones team will attend the BBNJ Working Group (Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction) organised by the United Nations.
At the previous meeting (16-19 June 2014), a strong coalition of States were united in calling for the negotiation of a new international agreement on high seas biodiversity. At this meeting, the final of a series of three on this question, States may recommend to the United Nations General Assembly to open the negotiations.
