Background and issues
The Paris Agreement, adopted at the COP 21, marks the entry into a new era of global cooperation on climate change based on the principles of self-determination, universality and solidarity. Climate negotiations should now work towards establishing a common set of rules and procedures to ensure the robustness, effectiveness and the irreversible nature of the new climate regime with a view to upholding the commitment made in 2015 : strengthening climate change action by regularly reviewing collective and individual national ambitions to achieve the common goal of limiting the global average temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Research objectives
The aim of this project is to support international climate negotiations – especially under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) – by creating dedicated forums for discussion between specialists and negotiators from different key countries and proposing potential policy solutions to accelerate the transition of economies towards a more resilient, low-carbon future. It will also promote the regular review of national climate commitments by taking the perspective of long-term structural transformation of the economy.
