A French-German discussion-debate on the cross-impacts of national development choices for electric power systems, organised by Agora Energiewende and IDDRI.
France and Germany have entered a critical phase in the definition of their strategy for their electric power sectors. In France, the ongoing revision of the Multi-annual Energy Plan (PPE) will establish the broad lines for the French energy mix and the respective shares of renewables and nuclear energy for the next 10 years. In Germany, the new federal government plans to accelerate the development of renewable energies, and is setting up a commission tasked with drafting a progressive plan by 2019 to enable coal phase-out and to meet the climate targets by 2030.
These national debates are raising interest beyond the borders of the two countries. The French and German electric power systems are already closely linked, while power system integration in Europe is set to increase with the Energy Union strategy. The energy decisions made in one country will therefore have major implications in the other, but also throughout Europe. In this context, now seems to be the right time to step up consultations and to ensure closer cooperation on the energy transition between France and Germany.
