REPLAY (in french)
Initiated in late 2018 at the last COP of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Egypt, the process of preparing the new post-2020 global framework for biodiversity was severely disrupted by the Covid-19 crisis, which resulted in numerous postponements. Nevertheless, for two years, discussions and negotiations continued, as far as possible, online. The 15th Conference of the Parties (COP), which was supposed to take place in October 2020 in Kunming, was finally divided into two segments: a high-level session in October 2021 and a second one that should lead to the adoption of the global framework, possibly in summer 2022. The first in-person negotiation meetings since the beginning of the pandemic will be held from March, 14 to 29 in Geneva, Switzerland and will allow to re-launch the discussion dynamics.
For the 7th meeting of the Biodiversity Platform on April 6, IDDRI, in partnership with the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) and Sciences Po, reviewed the issues at stake in these negotiations a few days after their conclusion.
This event hosted stakeholders in the negotiations and high-level scientists to better understand the state of the discussions and grasp the challenges ahead for an ambitious framework to halt the erosion of biodiversity at all levels.
Welcome speech by Mathias Vicherat, Director of Sciences Po Paris.
