George Safonov, PhD, is a senior research fellow in the Deep Decarbonization Pathways (DDP) programme. He obtained a master's degree in economics from the Higher School of Economics in Moscow in 1996. He defended his doctoral thesis on the socio-economic analysis of decarbonisation in Russia at Moscow State University in 2001.

His main areas of research include sustainable development, the economics of climate change, environmental management, forestry, land use and the bioeconomy. Since 1999, George has been involved in international negotiations on the United Nations Climate Convention, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
Since 2013, George has been an active member of the Deep Decarbonization Pathways initiative, coordinated by IDDRI.

He is the author of several teaching courses on the economics of green innovations, the global energy transition, and market-based instruments for pollution control. George is the author and co-author of more than 80 scientific articles, books, reports and other publications, and an accredited expert for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other international organisations.
