Europe’s GHG emissions are falling, reaching 23% below 1990 levels in 2014 already. At the same time, the EU played a crucial role in the negotiation and now entry into force of the Paris Agreement. Europe’s domestic agenda is focused on the implementation of the EU’s ambitious nationally determined contribution, which is to reduce emissions by at least 40% by 2030. An intense legislative process is underway in this regard.
Now is a good time to step back and look at the bigger picture. The Paris Agreement sets a clear direction towards the deep decarbonisation of the global economy in the second half of the century. Is the ongoing structural transformation of the EU energy system in line with the objective of deep decarbonisation by 2050?
With a view to answering this question, IDDRI has convened a consortium of seven research institutes from around Europe. This event organized by IDDRI will be the occasion to present the study “State of the Low-Carbon Energy Union” developed by this consortium and then for the debate on the future of EU Energy and Climate Policy.
