Summary
The Deep Decarbonization Pathways Project (DDPP) is a collaborative global research initiative convened by the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), which seeks to understand how individual countries can transition, on a technological, socio-economic and policy “pathway”, to a low-carbon economy consistent with the internationally agreed goal of limiting anthropogenic warming to less than 2°C. The DDPP consists of domestic research teams, acting independently and which do not necessarily represent the official positions of national governments, from 16 countries representing 74% of current global GHG emissions: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.
As an outcome of the first phase of the project (2013-2015), the consortium published, in fall 2015, country reports presenting the in-depth analysis of country-specific transformation pathways, and a synthesis report presenting cross-cutting and aggregate analyses derived from the national scenarios1 . In parallel, a special issue of Climate Policy has been prepared in order to identify challenging issues and summarise insights from various parts of the DDPP process. This session will draw on the outcomes of this special issue (which is already accepted for publication and will be publicly available by July 2016). Chris Bataille will present the overarching content and the main insights from the six topic articles on: deep reduction modelling challenges and needs; consequences of decarbonization for global energy trade, energy security, and development; implementation of decarbonization policy under uncertainty; and accounting for production and trade in GHG intense materials needed in a decarbonized world. Henri Waisman will present more specifically the synthesis paper of this special issue, which discusses the rationale and methodological innovations developed under the DDPP and the role for national deep decarbonization pathways in implementing the Paris Agreement
