Reid Hall - 12h30-14h00
In September 2015, the United Nations agreed on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and decided on 17 new and universal Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what these did not achieve. They are integrated and indivisible, and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.
The seminar deliberations will both take stock of the main outcomes of the SDGs negotiations and will explore what remains to be done in terms of appropriation and implementation of these goals (which are to be enforced by sovereign Nations, and in cooperation with others).
It provides a unique opportunity to bring together stakeholders from governments, academia, NGOs, and private sector to share practical solutions towards the achievement of more sustainable and inclusive societies.
What were the main challenges during the negotiations? What do the SDGs reveal in terms of global governance? How will they impact upon EU Member States? Will they bring any change to EU policy-making process? SDGs are part of a "transformative agenda": what will make SDGs “transformative”? How will the review be set up? What would be the milestones towards transformation?
Henry de Cazotte and Ivonne Lobos Alva will address these questions and kick-start the debate.
