A panel organized by IDDRI as part of the annual conference of the International Studies Association (ISA, the main association of researchers in international relations) in 2011 (16-19 March) focused on: “Global Governance: Political Authority in Transition”.

Panel presentation:

"Environmental governance is a policy area where science has always been particularly infuential. International cooperation in the field of climate change, for example, has stemmed from scientific cooperation, formalized through the formation of the IPCC. Some observers would now like to see the IPCC serve as a model for new scientific bodies that would be in charge of assessing the state of other global issues of sustainable development, such as biodiversity or food security. Beyond the exemplary case of the IPCC, what is the role of science and scientists in international environmental governance? What can be learnt from the example of the IPCC? Recent controversies have highlighted the difficulty to account for scientific uncertainties in political decisions, and the fear that science might pose as politics. This panel will reflect on the interactions between science and policy, as well as on the integration of uncertainties in these interactions."
