High-Level Ministerial Meeting on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Lucien Chabason will participate to this meeting, co-hosted by the Director General of IUCN, Ms Julia Marton-Lefèvre, and the Executive Director of UNEP, Achim Steiner , in conjunction with the IUCN World Conservation Congress.

UNEP is convening the ad-hoc intergovernmental and multistakeholder meeting on IPBES, scheduled for 10-12 November 2008, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This meeting aims to deliberate on the need and rationale of a proposed intergovernmental platform, based on a concept note which laid out the need and modalities for an IPBES and was sent to a number of organisations for their comments. The proposed platform will build on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) follow-up initiative and the outcomes of the consultative process towards an International Mechanism of Scientific Expertise on Biodiversity (IMoSEB). The outcome of the meeting will be presented to the 25th session of the UNEP Governing Council - Ministerial Environmental Forum for its consideration.
This High-Level Ministerial Meeting will be held in preparation for the abovementioned ad-hoc intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder meeting scheduled for November 2008, and invite the interested governments to further consider possible focus and modalities for the proposed IPBES.
