A speech by Teresa Ribera at this expert workshop for the G20 2017, chaired by Germany.
Overview
G20 countries’ energy policy agendas differ depending e.g. on resource endowments, economic development and political priorities. Yet, they are united in the challenge of aligning these different policy objectives with development pathways towards greenhouse gas neutrality in order to comply with the Paris Agreement. At the same time, significant opportunities abound for energy sector modernization, increasing energy security and economic diversification, among others. With regard to the transformation of the energy sector and the importance of a secure, economic and environmentally friendly energy supply, the role of long-term energy policy analysis, scenarios and expert recommendations will continue to increase in importance. For realizing these opportunities, international cooperation and exchange have a key role to play. To this end the German G20 Presidency in its energy and climate agenda will address the implementation of the Paris Agreement together with the questions of a long-term transition towards the decarbonization of energy systems.
