Louis-Georges Soler is a food economist and former Director of Research at INRAE (French public research institute working on the sustainable development of agriculture, food and the environment), where he spent his entire career. He successively headed several research units, before becoming Deputy Scientific Director for Food and the Bioeconomy. In terms of research, he has contributed, as coordinator or member of coordinating teams, to numerous European and national research projects concerning (1) the analysis of corporate strategies and public regulation of food quality, (2) the evaluation of public policies relating to food, health and the environment, (3) the determinants of food consumption. He has initiated a number of multi-disciplinary research projects dealing with nutritional and public health policy issues related to changing diets, bringing together epidemiologists, food scientists and social scientists. He is particularly interested in the economic and cost-benefit evaluation of public policy instruments such as consumer information, demand-side tax policies and product labeling. He was one of the founders of the Observatoire de la qualité de l'alimentation (Oqali) run by INRAE and Anses, whose aim is to assess the impact of product innovations and food reformulation initiatives implemented by the food industry on the nutritional quality of the food supply. He is also currently Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institut Agro, and Vice-Chairman of the Anses “Socio-Economic Analysis” Expert Committee.
