Objectives and mission

Under the supervision of the IDDRI Ocean Programme Director and in cooperation with the Ocean Team, the successful candidate will contribute to a project aimed at assessing the challenges and opportunities of the regional approach for the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean. The project deliverables will include: (i) a report outlining the Barcelona Convention’s key achievements and remaining challenges; and (ii) a report identifying opportunities for regional seas programmes to implement the United Nations Environment Assembly Resolution 6/15 on "Strengthening Ocean Efforts to Tackle Climate Change, Marine Biodiversity Loss, and Pollution”. Draft reports will be presented at the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, in June 2024.

In this context, the successful candidate will acquire skills and experience in: 

  • Developing  a working methodology; 
  • Reviewing scientific and policy literature; 
  • Conducting interviews with relevant stakeholders; 
  • Preparing notes, analysis and contributing to the drafting of the reports. 

Required qualifications 

  • Undergraduate qualification in a relevant field, preferably Master II or PhD student; 
  • Knowledge and understanding of key ocean governance issues; 
  • Fluent in English (fluency in French/Spanish appreciated); 
  • Excellent research, analysis and writing skills; 
  • Motivated, able to work independently and use own initiative.

Internship agreement

  • 6 months, starting in January 2025
  • 35 hours per week
  • Monthly stipend: €1,100 net
  • Subsidised restaurant tickets (60%) and public transport (55%)
  • Please note that, in accordance with French regulations, the following conditions need to be met for candidates to be eligible for this internship position:
  • Be currently enrolled at a university or higher education institution; 
  • The university can provide/sign an internship agreement;
  • The student is covered by his/her student insurance policy.
