Deep Decarbonization Pathways
Presentation
Keeping global warming well below +2°C requires immediate changes, through choices that will lead economies towards a carbon-neutral world by the second half of the century. What is needed is known, the challenge therefore lies in determining how to do it, and what is the necessary sequence of actions. Countries, cities, and industries need to put in place strategies to achieve development that are compatible with climate change global targets.
The Deep Decarbonization Pathways is an initiative led by IDDRI that aims at helping those actors in that respect. It is a global network of in-country experts who propose realistic pathways to deep decarbonization. In 2023, the DDP network is active in 35 countries on all continents. Its work is based on a transparent common methodology to inform both science and policy and is based on the principles of being country-driven, country-led, and country-owned.
Together, members of the DDP network :
- Support debate on ambitious and realistic decarbonization pathways, country by country, showing key drivers and their effects by 2050 ;
- Make their common methodology available to all, so that every government or stakeholder can build and propose its own pathways ;
- Develop in-country expertise and international scientific knowledge.
The DDP initiative contributes to the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement inviting countries to communicate “long-term low emission development strategies”. This complements and brings perspective to the revision of countries' official commitments (Nationally Determined Contributions), which occurs every five years.
Additionally, the DDP has three main campaign areas that help in transforming systems to reach a deeply decarbonized world: international climate governance, sectoral transformations, and paradigm shift in finance.
