Overview
"ADEME, IRD and FAO are joining to organize a conference on environmental assessment tools as part of Milano World Expo. The aim is to present some concrete initiatives illustrating the possibilities offered by environmental assessment methods. The examples focus on the agricultural and food system both in Europe and other countries.
There will be a first focus on the agricultural systems, showing examples where useful information is provided by environmental assessment tools and can support sustainable systems and policies. It will be also an opportunity to gain a better understanding on these tools, explaining in a pedagogical way the state of knowledge but also the methodological issues remaining.
The second focus will be downstream in the food chain, highlighting the importance to link production and consumption patterns to reach a sustainable food system. Learnings gained from Life Cycle Approaches will be presented, describing the environmental hotspots along the food chain. The tools are also a key to help consumers to make more sustainable choices, providing them with reliable information. Finally, we will open the discussion on what could be the sustainable diets for tomorrow, linking nutritional, cultural and environmental knowledge together."
