"Based on the practical experiences of different ABS stakeholders, this side event will assess the conditions that need to be established for market-based ABS mechanisms (and relevant regulatory tools) to deliver on biodiversity conservation. Three main categories of conditions have to be established for allowing ABS mechanisms to contribute to a better management of biodiversity and to its conservation. Namely, they concern the availability and the capacity of relevant stakeholders to access and use funding, institutional arrangements and relevant knowledge. To what extent can the Nagoya Protocol promote establishing these conditions? The focus of the presentations will be on empirical evidence and quantitative information that can show the expected positive correlations between ABS and biodiversity conservation. An important pillar of the Nagoya Protocol regulates access to genetic resources. In the context of access legislation, what would be the implications of the biodiversity conservation focus for the private sector? How can access to genetic resources and research for commercial use be combined with biodiversity conservation?"
